What Is a CNC Machine? Types, Uses and Used CNC Prices in India

By Atharva Rane, Founder, Corel Machinery · Updated

A CNC machine is a machine tool whose movements are driven by a computer program instead of a hand on a wheel. Here are the main types — VMC, CNC lathe, HMC, CNC grinder, wire EDM — what each one makes, and what a used one costs in India.

A CNC machine is a machine tool — a lathe, mill, grinder or cutter — whose movements are controlled by a computer program instead of by an operator turning handwheels. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control: the program (usually G-code) tells each axis where to move, how fast, and when to start the spindle, change the tool or switch on coolant. The same part can then be made again and again to the same dimensions, which is why CNC machines run most production machining in India today.

How a CNC machine works

Every CNC machine has the same four building blocks:

  • The control — the computer and screen (Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Heidenhain, Mazatrol and others) that reads the program and drives the machine. See our comparison of Fanuc, Siemens and Mitsubishi controls.
  • Servo motors and ballscrews — one per axis, turning the control's commands into precise movement, with encoders reporting the actual position back.
  • The spindle — spins either the cutting tool (milling) or the workpiece (turning).
  • The tool changer or turret — swaps tools automatically so one program can rough, finish, drill and tap without anyone stopping the machine.

The operator's job shifts from cutting to setting up: loading the program, clamping the part, setting tool and work offsets, then letting the cycle run.

The main types of CNC machine

Type What moves Typical work
VMC (vertical machining center) Vertical spindle carries the tool; table moves the part in X/Y Plates, housings, moulds, brackets, drilling and tapping
CNC lathe / turning center Workpiece spins; tools on a turret cut it Shafts, pins, bushes, flanges — anything round
HMC (horizontal machining center) Horizontal spindle; part on a rotary pallet Multi-face parts — pump and valve bodies, gearbox housings — in volume
VTL (vertical turning lathe) Large table spins the part; ram carries the tool Big, heavy discs, rings and wheels
CNC grinder Abrasive wheel removes very small amounts Finishing to tight size and surface finish
Wire-cut EDM A charged wire erodes the metal Dies, punches, hard materials, sharp internal corners

The two you will meet most often are the VMC and the CNC lathe. A VMC mills flat and prismatic parts; a CNC lathe turns round ones. Many shops start with one of each.

CNC vs conventional machines

A conventional (manual) machine does the same kind of cutting, but a skilled operator moves each axis by hand. Conventional lathes and milling machines are cheaper, simpler to maintain and still the right tool for one-off repair work, toolrooms and short jobs. CNC wins on repeatability, complex shapes and unattended production — once a program is proven, part 500 matches part 1.

Buying a used CNC machine in India

Most CNC machines in Indian job shops were bought used: a well-kept Japanese, Korean or Taiwanese machine gives years of production at a fraction of the new price. What matters most:

  • The control and its support — Fanuc is by far the easiest to find spares and operators for in India.
  • Spindle health and axis backlash — the two wear points that decide accuracy.
  • Seeing it run — power it up, cycle the tool changer, check the alarm history.

Our step-by-step checklists cover each type: buying a used VMC, buying a used CNC turning center and buying a used HMC.

What does a used CNC machine cost?

A note on prices: figures below are broad indicative bands for the Indian used-machine market and move with age, spindle hours, brand, control generation and condition. Treat them as ballpark, not quotes — ask us for a current price against a specific machine.

  • Used 2-axis CNC lathe: typically ₹5–18 lakh.
  • Entry job-shop VMC (BT40): typically ₹8–18 lakh.
  • Mid-size / late-model VMC: typically ₹18–35 lakh.
  • Smaller / older HMC: typically ₹25–60 lakh.
  • Larger or precision CNC grinder: typically ₹12–40 lakh.
